Blanket Coverage
Blanket coverage simplifies insurance administration by covering all property in a category without requiring individual scheduling, useful for businesses with large, frequently changing inventories.

Definition
Blanket coverage is an insurance approach in which a single limit applies to all property of a certain type or at certain locations, without requiring each individual item to be listed or scheduled. An inventory of merchandise in a retail store might be covered on a blanket basis at $100,000 rather than scheduling every item individually. A contractor with tools at multiple job sites can use blanket inland marine coverage rather than tracking each site's tools separately. Blanket coverage is administratively simpler than scheduled coverage and adapts automatically to inventory changes — as new merchandise arrives or tools are acquired, they are automatically covered without policy amendments. However, blanket coverage typically applies actual cash value (ACV) settlement, meaning depreciation is deducted at claim time, whereas scheduled property applies agreed value. The blanket limit also serves as a cap — if actual inventory value exceeds the blanket limit and a loss occurs, recovery is limited to the stated blanket amount. Regular inventory audits help ensure blanket limits remain adequate as inventory grows. For businesses with large, dynamic inventories that don't require full replacement-cost protection, blanket coverage offers cost efficiency; for high-value items requiring exact valuation, scheduling may be preferable.
