Home Inventory Worksheet
Room-by-room printable inventory for homeowners and renters insurance. Documenting contents BEFORE a loss is the difference between a fast, full settlement and a slow, disputed one.
This content is educational and is not legal, financial, or insurance advice. Coverage decisions depend on your specific situation, risk tolerance, and the actual policy contract you’re offered. For a binding recommendation, speak with a licensed insurance agent in your state, or contact your state Department of Insurance.
For each item, capture:
- → Description: brand, model, color, distinguishing features
- → Date acquired (estimate is fine for older items)

- → Serial number for electronics, appliances, firearms, jewelry
- → Photo of the item, including any serial number plates

Tips for an effective inventory
- → Walk through each room with a phone camera, narrating descriptions and serial numbers — video is often more efficient than photos plus lists.
- → Open closets, drawers, and cabinets in your video walkthrough.
- → Save inventory copies to cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud), not just on your home computer.
- → Update the inventory annually and after major purchases.
- → For items above the policy’s special limit (jewelry typically $1,500-$2,500, firearms $2,500), schedule them separately with appraisals.
- → Use the interactive Home Inventory Builder tool to save your inventory locally in your browser.
