Telematics Insurance
Insurance that uses in-car devices or smartphone apps to track driving behavior and personalize premiums.

Definition
Telematics insurance uses GPS and sensors — either through a plug-in OBD-II device or a smartphone app — to monitor driving behavior including speed, hard braking, cornering, time of day, and miles driven. Safe drivers earn discounts that can reach 20–40% with carriers like Progressive (Snapshot), Allstate (Drivewise), and State Farm (Drive Safe & Save). However, data collected can also increase your premium if risky behaviors are detected, and some programs share data with third parties. Privacy advocates flag telematics data as a potential concern in future litigation. Always read the privacy policy before enrolling.
