Definition
A wind mitigation inspection (also called a wind mitigation inventory or 1802 inspection in Florida) documents a home's resistance to wind damage by evaluating the roof covering material, roof deck attachment, roof-to-wall connections, roof shape, opening protection (hurricane shutters or impact glass), and building code compliance. In Florida, the OIR-B1-1802 form is the standard report; completed by a licensed inspector, contractor, engineer, or architect, it is submitted to the insurer to qualify for mandatory wind mitigation credits that can reduce the wind-coverage portion of the premium by 10–60%. Homes with hip roofs, single-ply membrane roofing, secondary water resistance layers, and hurricane shutters receive the largest credits. The inspection costs approximately $100–$200 and is valid for 5 years (or until the roof or structure changes). Many Florida homeowners recoup the inspection cost in premium savings within the first month of the new policy period. Other Gulf and Atlantic states have adopted similar inspection programs, though Florida's is the most formalized.
