Definition
Medigap Plan N is a standardized Medicare Supplement policy that provides broad coverage of Original Medicare cost-sharing while incorporating modest cost-sharing elements to keep premiums lower than Plan G. Plan N covers the Part A hospital deductible ($1,676 in 2026), Part A coinsurance, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, Part B coinsurance (after the $283 annual Part B deductible, which Plan N does not cover), and foreign travel emergency care. However, Plan N requires copayments of up to $20 for physician office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that do not result in inpatient admission. Critically, Plan N does not cover Part B excess charges — the additional amount that non-participating Medicare providers can legally charge above the Medicare-approved amount (up to 15% above the Medicare-approved rate). This excess charge exposure is limited to providers who do not accept Medicare assignment, so beneficiaries on Plan N should confirm that their providers do accept assignment before enrolling. Plan N is typically 15–25% cheaper than Plan G, making it attractive for beneficiaries who see few specialists.
