Definition
Level term life insurance is the most widely purchased form of life insurance in the United States, combining predictable costs with straightforward death benefit protection for a defined period. The premium is locked in at issue and never increases during the term; a 35-year-old male in preferred health might pay $28 per month for a $500,000 20-year level term policy from a top-rated carrier. Term lengths typically range from 10 to 30 years in five-year increments, with some carriers offering 35- or 40-year terms. If the insured dies during the term, the full face amount is paid to the beneficiary income-tax-free under IRC Section 101(a). At the end of the term, coverage expires unless the policyholder converts to a permanent policy (see convertible term) or renews at a much higher premium. Level term is the cornerstone of most financial planning recommendations for income replacement during the years when dependents and debts are greatest, and $500,000–$1 million in coverage is often cited as a baseline for families.
