Definition
An independent adjuster (IA) is a licensed claims professional who contracts with one or more insurance companies to investigate, document, and evaluate insurance claims—but is not a direct employee of any single insurer. Carriers rely heavily on independent adjusters during catastrophe events (hurricanes, wildfires, hail storms) when claim volume exceeds the capacity of their staff adjuster workforce. IAs are paid on a fee schedule, often per-claim or per-inspection, and must hold adjuster licenses in every state where they work. Because they are hired by the insurer, independent adjusters represent the insurance company's interests, not the policyholder's—a key distinction from public adjusters. Large IA firms such as Pilot Catastrophe Services and Crawford & Company deploy hundreds of adjusters to disaster zones within 48–72 hours of a major event. State licensing requirements vary: Texas, Florida, and California have among the most rigorous IA licensing exams, while some states allow reciprocal licensing for adjusters already licensed elsewhere.
