Definition
Coverage B protects structures on the insured property that are separated from the main house by a clear space or connected only by a fence, utility line, or similar connection — such as detached garages, pool houses, fences, retaining walls, driveways, sidewalks, and storage sheds. The standard Coverage B limit is 10% of the Coverage A (dwelling) limit; on a $400,000 home, that provides $40,000 for other structures. Policyholders with large detached garages, expensive fences, or multiple outbuildings may need to increase Coverage B by endorsement. Structures used for business purposes are typically excluded from Coverage B; a detached home office used for commercial activity requires separate business insurance. Flood damage to other structures is excluded, just as it is for the main dwelling, and requires a separate flood policy. Coverage B claims follow the same settlement basis (ACV or replacement cost) as Coverage A.
