Burial Insurance
Burial insurance is a colloquial term for small whole life or final expense policies intended to cover the direct costs of a funeral, burial, or cremation, relieving family members of immediate out-of-pocket expenses.

Definition
Burial insurance is functionally identical to final expense insurance—small-face whole life coverage—but the marketing language specifically targets individuals concerned about the immediate cash needs of a funeral. Funeral homes in the United States charge between $7,000 and $15,000 for a full-service burial in 2026, with cremation averaging $2,000–$5,000, making even a modest $10,000 policy meaningful. Some burial insurance is sold as pre-need funeral insurance directly through funeral homes, where the benefit is assigned directly to the funeral parlor to cover contracted services. Unlike pre-need contracts, a standard burial insurance policy pays a cash death benefit to the named beneficiary, who then chooses how to apply the funds. Policies may be simplified-issue (health questions asked, no exam required) or guaranteed-issue (no health questions, graded benefit applies in years one and two). A 70-year-old female non-smoker might pay approximately $60–$90 per month for $10,000 in guaranteed-issue burial coverage.
